X-tra Fine Antique Shell Cameo Brooch Pendant Bacchante 14k

Description

Offered is a very fine carved antique shell cameo brooch pendant. It features a Bacchanalian Maenad facing left. Her hair is very ornate carved by a master hand and embellished with bunches of grapes vines and leaves. Her face has a playful yet serene expression. There is even a small braid at the back of her head. The carving is masterful with good relief. She is set in a stunning Etruscan revival 14 karat gold frame not marked but tested. The frame has a labor intensive design on it that is not found today in modern goldsmithing. I would date the piece to 1840 to 1850. It is a large piece measuring 2 1/2 x 2” and it weighs 22 grams. It has the old C catch and T bar pin mechanism and a loop at the top for use as a pendant. It is In very good to excellent antique used condition. There are no chips or cracks, only a few faint internal lines. Wonderful example of early to mid Victorian jewelry.
