Large Antique 14K Gold High Relief Carved Cameo Pendant - Brooch Of Nyx
This fine antique cameo is a beautifully carved, 14k gold mounted depiction of Nyx (Roman Nox), the Greek Goddess of night, with numerous allusive symbols in a conspicuous 2 1/4 x 1 7/8-inch pendant - brooch. Making excellent advantage of the shell's russet-orange, marble white and creamy orange and purple, the artist has carved Nyx with classical Greco-Roman features, closed eyes, an elegantly draped headdress with night-blooming lilies and a sweep of fabric representing her robe, a symbol of night mists. Accompanying Nyx are several associated symbols including stars, a crescent moon and a perched owl with dramatically spread wings. Very nicely detailed, the cameo is mounted in 14K yellow gold with a double border of rope-twisted and chevron-patterned wire, a locking pin-back and a folding bail. In excellent condition with no cracks, chips or other damage and only some minor shrinkage striations, the pendant-brooch tests positive for 14k gold, measures 2 1/4 x 1 7/8-inches not including the bail and weighs 22.2 grams.
