EXCEPTIONAL RARE ANTIQUE CORAL CAMEO IN GOLD MOUNT

This is an antique cameo that has so much going on, it’s hard to know where to start.
First it’s a rare piece of Mediterranean coral, in a soft orange and cream color
combination, quite large and thick which allowed the carver to create a three-
dimensional rendering of Ariadne, wife of Dionysus. She was revered in cameo
art for the love she shared with her husband, who rescued her from an abusive
relationship and cared for her all their days together. The detail here is quite
extraordinary, with the signature grapes and grape leaf symbols beautifully
rendered in a complex cascade that fills her hair and drapes to the shoulder.
Full back, with draped gown and exposed shoulder, and a face that is simply
divine, with rounded cheek, petite lips and deep-set eye. Please note the small
darker indentations near the neck are where sea creatures burrowed and are not
flaws or breaks, but indicative of the native quality of this genuine material. Cameo
set in delicately scrolled gold mount. Pieces of this quality and artistry are quite rare.
